The Best Way To Correct Pigeon Toed (In-Toe) Walking- With Your Podiatrist

In-toe walking or pigeon-toed walking is when your child’s feet point and step inward as they walk or run.
This may be caused by a number of conditions, including primary deformities within the foot, issues with tibial torsion, and femoral anteversion.

Treatment will depend on the cause of the in-toe walking, but often involves corrective shoe inserts or orthotics to help keep the feet pointing and stepping outward.

What Causes Pigeon Toeing?

The most common causes of in-toeing occur from an inward twist in one of three areas:

1. The thigh (known as femoral anteversion)

The thigh (known as femoral anteversion), is when the thigh rotates inward rather than outward. This causes the feet to point and step inward as they walk.
Usually, femoral anteversion occurs as a result of a femoral torsion, which is when one of the femoral bones twists. This causes the feet to point inward as they walk.

2. Shin (tibial torsion)

The shin is the large bone at the bottom of your leg. When a torsion (twisting) occurs in the tibia, it causes the feet to point and step inward as they walk. Usually, tibial torsion occurs as a result of a femoral torsion, which is when one of the femoral bones twists. This causes the feet to point inward as they walk.

3. The forefoot (metatarsus adductus)

The forefoot is the part of your foot that is closest to your toes. When the metatarsal bone (the bone that connects your toes) adducts (or bends inward), it causes the feet to point and step inward as they walk. Usually, metatarsus adductus occurs from birth as a result of the position your child’s feet were in the womb. This causes the feet to point inward as they walk.

The Best Treatment For Pigeon-Toed Walking

The best treatment for in-toeing regularly prescribed by a Podiatrist is Custom orthotics insoles.

Podiatrists are able to create shoe inserts with included gait plates in ideal degrees to correct your child’s exact degree of in-toeing.

The orthotics work as a device to change the way your child walks and encourages muscle groups to re-adjust to the correction. So over time the in-toeing/pigeon-toeing will visibly decrease and straighten your child’s walking pattern.

At Unisoles our Podiatrists create orthotics that are custom fitted to your child’s feet and can be worn in all their shoes.

Best of all, we can do this all online at a cost much lower than what you would pay if you were to see a Podiatrist in a clinical environment.
